Is it really possible for men to get pregnant?

Many people are debating if men can possibly get pregnant. Because of operation such as gender reassignment surgery, some people do believe that not only women could get pregnant but it is also possible for men.

The 1994 film Junior starring Arnold Schwarzenegger gave people an imagination of the possibility that guys could get pregnant.

In the movie, Schwartznegger’s character is a scientist who made himself the subject of a medical experiment aimed at achieving pregnancy by way of hormone therapy.

The therapy will allow the embryo to develop the way an embryo would in any unintentional extrauterine or outside then uterus just like how it forms in a female. But for women, this pregnancy is extremely dangerous and it must be terminated.

But in the movie, it was done intentionally and they allowed to continue until the fetus was delivered surgically. But it is important to know that it is extremely dangerous in real life to implant an embryo into a man or women’s peritoneal cavity.

For example, transgender people who acquire gender-change therapy (culminating in gender reassignment surgery) will most likely the first ones to have the first uterine transplants to enable a guy to get form a fetus inside.


Also, they could also have a lactating breast, even a “neoclitorus” reconstructed from penile tissue and enabling orgasm.

Karine Chung M.D. explained that transplanting a functional womb is not impossible to transgender women. She directs the fertility preservation program at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.

“It’s doable, it just hasn’t been done…My guess is five, 10 years away, maybe sooner," she said.

Christine McGinn M.D., a plastic surgeon on New Hope, Pennsylvania who is consulting on a film about the early days of sex reassignment surgery said:

“I’d bet just about every transgender person who is female will want to do it, if it were covered by insurance."

“Human drive to be a mother for a woman is a very serious thing,” she said.

“Transgender women are no different.”
